Bina Chowdhury Central Library

Introduction:

Bina Chowdhury Central Library was formed by merging GIMT Library & GIPS Library in the year 2018 with the loving memory of late Bina Choudhury, founder president of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society (SSAS). It is located on the ground floor of the newly constructed boys’ hostel of its campus, and it occupies a total carpet area of = 6481.76 sq. ft. in where the main Library occupies the 3021.92 sq. ft. carpet area and Reading Room (120 seating capacity) has 3459.84 sq. ft. carpet area. The Central Library is full of different textbooks, reference books and other reference sources like encyclopaedia, dictionaries, novels, biographies etc. The library is divided into different sections that house the Reading Room Corner, Textbook Corner, Periodical Corner, Reference Corner, Internet Section, Dissertation Corner, Circulation Corner, Technical Processing Section, and the Competitive Examination Corner – a section set aside for students who are preparing for GPAT & GATE. The library is playing a major role in providing quality Engineering, Management, Pharmaceutical education to students, currently boasts over 45000 volumes of books serving about 2500 students and 180 faculty & staff. These include textbooks, reference books, journals, and other study materials such as dissertations, CD-ROMs, and several electronic resources like E-Journals subscribed through J-Gate and DELNET Consortium. Apart from providing strong and vital support to the fraternity, plans are in place to provide innovative solutions like Digital Reference Services, Electronic Document Delivery Services beyond the four walls of the library.

The library follows DDC 22nd Edition and AACR-II for the classification and cataloguing of the documents respectively. The library is partially automated with the Library Management Software SOUL 2.0.

Mission – The main mission of the central library is to support the teaching, learning and research programs of the faculty members, students & research scholars. The library aims to develop a comprehensive collection of print and electronic resources useful for the faculty and the students at the institute.

  • Developing and providing access to rich and diverse resources regardless of format, location, or mode of access.

Protocol & Composition:

Rules for Lending Books:

  1. The Privilege of borrowing books from the library is restricted to the registered members only.
  2. Each member will have one Library Card.
  3. Library Card is not transferable.
  4. Student Members must come to the library personally and tender his/her Library Card at Circulation Counter at the time of the transaction.
  5. The Assistant Librarian may recall any book from the member at any time.
  1. Loose issues of Journals/Periodicals are not meant for an issue.
  2. A Library Clearance Certificate may be issued to members only on returning all books borrowed and surrendering the Library Card.
  3. A fine of Rs. 2/- day will be charged as Late Fine if the Borrowers do not return/ renew the books as per the rule of the library. Moreover, if the fines cross the maximum limit of Rs. 500.00 then the Borrower’s Membership will be temporarily suspended.
  4. The loss of the Library Master Card should be reported immediately in writing to the Assistant Librarian and a fine of Rs. 50/- will be charged for the re-issue of a new card.

  5. The Loss of books borrowed by a user in his/her custody, the borrower shall be liable to replace the book or bear the cost of replacement is not done within 15 days, the defaulter will be charged as follows.
    1. Three times the cost of the book if the book is in print.
    1. Four times the cost of the book, if the book is out of print.
    1. If the book of a multi-volume set is lost or damaged, the member concerned shall be liable to replace the whole set or pay the cost of the same on the above line.

General Rules:

  1. All kinds of personal belongings except notebooks are supposed to be kept at the Property Counter at the entrance.
  2. Register your name at the Library Gate Register before the entrance.
  3. Keep Silence is a must inside the library.
  4. Use of Mobile Phones is strictly prohibited inside the library.
  5. Member shall not smoke or spite in any part of the library.
  6. While browsing books, no book should be replaced by the user on the stack themselves. Users are requested to use the OPAC facility provided by GIPS Library to search a book available in the library.
  7. The physical condition of the book should be good while checking out. Mutilation of pages if found must be brought to the notice of the circulation in charge. Otherwise, the borrower himself/herself shall be responsible for the mutilation of the book if detected afterwards.
  8. Underlining, marking, folding of pages, etc. in the book is strictly prohibited.
  9. Upon any infringement of the library rules, members shall forfeit privileges of admission and membership of the library.
  10. The Assistant Librarian reserves the right to suspend, or delinquent membership of any member found misbehaving, abusing the library staff or behaving indecently.
  11. The members caught tearing of pages/stealing books or otherwise mutilating books will be suspended forthwith from using library facilities and further disciplinary action will be initiated against him/her by the Institute.                                                                                  

Function:

  1. To ensure the necessary quiet environment for reading, studying, and researching.
  2. To provide all the students with the essential research and reference materials like bibliographies, biographies, glossaries, abstracts, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, manuals, atlases, gazetteers, monographs, etc.
  3. To help new students to orientate in how to source and find the necessary materials quickly and correctly.
  4. Getting the stock of knowledge materials organised and maintained for use.
  5. Helping Students Learn About Books.
  6. Providing e-resource accessibility to all the users.
  7. Digitization of previous year question paper.

Members:

The central library has members of two categories i.e., permanent member and temporary member. All permanent Teaching, Non-Teaching staff of the institute belong to the permanent category and all temporary teaching, non-teaching staff, research scholar and students at the institute belong to a temporary category.
